INTRODUCTION
MYSTICISM/SPIRITUALITY
(TASAWAF)
With the name of “Allah”, the all
Merciful, the very Merciful.
Blessings immeasurable be, Upon His Prophet, who is the seal of the Prophets and
his companions, his family, his progeny and his Ummah.
*********************************
When Allah (Subhana hu
Wa Ta’la) created Hazrat Aadam (Eleh as Salam) He blew in him His spirit. It
is stated in the Holy Quran in surah Al Hijr:
“Indeed
We created man from ringing clay made from the decayed mud, as for the Jann (the
first jinn), We had created him earlier from the fire of the scorching wind.
Recall when Your Lord said to the Angels, “I am going to create a human being
from ringing clay made of decayed mud. When I form him perfect, and blow in him
of MY SPIRIT, then you must fall down before him in prostration” (Ayat 26—29).
This was the spirit of the
Creator in the human beings which always made them restless and uneasy in this
world of deceit and selfishness. As the time passed by the soul and spirit
started to forget eternal link. The worldly pulls, attraction and satanic
desires grasped them to the lower levels. For such humans Allah (Subhana hu
Wa Ta’la) commented in the Holy Quran in surah At-Teen:
“We
have created man in best composition then we turned him into the lowest of the
low, except those who believed and did righteous deeds, because for them there
is a reward never ending.”
(Ayat
3-6)
There was darkness and
gloom, God saw this and said, “Let there be light.” The light to enlighten the
spirit was revealed and the Prophets were sent to remind the humans the
forgotten lesson and establish the detached link between the spirit of Man and
the Creator.
This continued till the
last of all the Prophets, the seal of the Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (Sallallahu
‘alaihi Wa Sallam) was sent from the progeny of Hazrat Ibrahim (Eleh
Salam). When Ibrahim (Eleh Salam) along with his son Ismail (Eleh
Salam) was raising up the foundation of Kabah (the sacred House of God) in
Makkah tul Makarma , he prayed earnestly to his Lord in these words:
“And,
our Lord, raise in their midst a Messenger from among them, who should recite to
them Your verses, and teach them the book and the wisdom, and CLEANSE them of
all impurities. Indeed You, and You alone, are the All Mighty, and the All-Wise.”(Surah
Al-Baqarah 129)”
Hazrat Ibrahim (Eleh
Salam) asked Allah (Subhana hu Wa Ta’la) for a Prophet who indeed was
our Holy Prophet Sayyiduna Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam) who
should be one of them, and perform the following four duties:
If we look at the world of
today, we will find many institutions performing the first three functions. The
last and important Prophetic chore is totally neglected. The result is that in
the Muslims of today hypocrisy is widespread. We are Muslims by name. The true
inner core of Islam which stands for peace, justice, mutual equality, respects
amongst fellow human beings, appropriate rights for the females, deprived and
the weak and justice in all spheres of life is nearly non existent.
The injunctions of Islam,
the commands of Allah and His Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam) in
the form of “Shariya Islamia” is for all spheres of life i.e. prayer and
prostration, earning and spending, social inter course, rule of law and
legislation . It also guides us to be good human beings individually and norms
of an ideal welfare state.
Now a days, a minute
fraction of the Muslims, who try earnestly to practice religion are only
devoting themselves to prayer and prostration. They don’t let their businesses
their social relations and morals, be dictated by religious norms and dos and
don’ts of the Quran+Sunnah-----Shariya-e-Islamia.
That is the reason Muslim
have lost all respect and dignity which their ancestors had enjoyed in the past.
Not a very long time hence, in the 17th century AD, the history tells
us, in many communities and for that example in some parts of Indian
Sub-continent, police would not entertain a complaint against a Muslim for the
high morality which the community depicted. Earning by unfair means was a
shameful activity and despised by all the Muslims at large. People would not
give the hand of their daughter to a man who lived beyond his means.
When the religion lost its
influence on inner core, the selfish inner core (Nafs) grew strong slowly
and wordly desire over took the spiritual means. The Muslims lost their all
charisma, respect and dignity. Then there arose the people who tried to kindle
the love of the Creator which the spirit/soul originally had, and was never
prepared to disobey and go astray.
Through experience it has
been learnt that the love of the Creator, the warmth of passion is like
charcoal. If you place a charcoal along with a burning charcoal it ignites all
those put in its close proximity.
The noble Companions (Sehaba)
of the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam) learnt the extreme love of
Allah, by enlightening the love of the Creator, through this means …… from heart
to heart. Any body who came in the physical attendance of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu
‘alaihi Wa Sallam) after accepting Islam was raised to the status of a
Sehabi (worthy companion of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam).
The grade of his belief (Eman) attained a summit, which all scholars of
Ummah by consensus agree that no one till the day of Judgment can achieve. It is
because the reflection of faith in the heart of the Prophet (Sallallahu
‘alaihi Wa Sallam) fell on the heart of Sehabi which enlightened his
soul/spirit to the extent which is un-attainable by any other person in the
absence of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam) Similarly
those who enjoyed the company of Shaba were termed as “Tabaeen” .Their
purity of soul was only next to Sehaba kiram
The best time of all the
times in this universe was when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa
Sallam) honoured this world by His presence. As the time passed by from the
best of all the eras till to-day, the worldly desires started to creep in to the
hearts of the people and thus decline in the divine love of the Creator and
weakening of the eternal relationship between the soul and Allah. The
consequence was the drop off in the true spirit of Islam, the fear of Allah
(Taqwa) self discipline, tolerance, sacrificing ones own interests over that
of others, a balanced life so as to say in all spheres diminished to the level
of near extinction. The people who followed Islam were split into two groups.
The first group was
Muslims just by name; they would only follow a few Islamic chores at the time of
marrying or death and would do away with their lives as per their desires and
instincts. The second group claimed themselves as practicing Muslims and would
concentrate on prayer and prostration only. The second group restricted Islam to
quarter of religion. They did not let the religious principles govern their
businesses, social inter course and their lives in general. The true spirit of
Shariya-e-Islamia was lacking. The evil inner core was an abode of Satan and the
worldly affections and desires over ruled their lives. The importance of Prayer
and prostration (Ebadat) cannot be ignored, but if they do not improve
upon our every day lives, are not cultivating in us the sense of responsibility,
that we are answerable for all our deeds before Allah (Subhan a hu wa Ta’la)
then the desired ends are for sure not being met.
In such a
situation, the true Islam which encompasses the whole life, all spheres as was
portrayed by companions of the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam) (Sehaba-e-Kram)
and was set as an ideal, could be seen in a very few people .
Then arose a group of
people, who were later called as “Sufis” or “Mystics” or “Saints” who diagnosed
the problem. They said that the inner core, the heart, the soul had been rusted
by over whelming worldly desires. The link to Allah had become either weak or
non-existent. The result was that the Muslims only accepted those parts of Islam
which suited them and those injunctions which collided with their interests were
abandoned and ignored.
These Sufia,
pious people recommended certain treatment for cleansing the inner self, which
were in line with Sharia e Islamia, derived from Quran and Sunnah. The primary
was to have an earnest relationship with some God fearing person, who had
adopted the religion in letter and spirit, and spend time in his company, so
that the love and fear of Allah would get transferred from heart to heart. The
second was certain Aazkar (Remembering of Allah by His names) which would serve
as a seed of love of Allah in their hearts. This would cleanse the inner core of
the satanic impurities which were distracting the heart and soul from obeying
the commands of Allah (Subhan a hu WaTa’la), the Prophet (Sallallahu
‘alaihi Wa Sallam) and Sharia.
Thus developed different
spiritual groups, by different leaders and different methodologies to cleanse
the inner cores. The methodologies might be different but the aims and
objectives were essentially the same i.e. to kindle the lamp of Allah’s love, so
that adoption of Sharia e Islamia becomes dear and easy.
The Naqshbandi
spiritual family is attributed to Sayyiduna Abu Bakar Siddique (Radi Allah un
hu) the first caliph after Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam)
In this clan the main stay
is on silent remembrance of Allah in the heart through imagination. The name,
the personal name of Creator is Allah; other names are all His attributes. The
ziker of Naqshbandia chain is remembrance of the Creator in the heart by His
name repeating it calmly in solitude, Allah--- Allah--- Allah--- Allah--- Allah.
The second important feature of Naqshbandia is spending some time in the company
of some one who has been trained by a Shaikh a spiritual teacher and allowed to
train other people.
This web site
is being developed as an introduction to the Naqshbandia chain with the hope it
would benefit those who wish to spend their lives truly in the light of commands
of Islam. They want to be in the foot steps of Sehaba-e-Keram. The Commands of
Sharia, dos and don’ts are agreed to and practiced in all spheres of life,
because of the eternal Love of the Creator, so dear and near.
May Allah be pleased with
us in the lives here, and grant forgiveness on the day of Judgment, May Allah
take us in his Divine Care, Blessings in abundance be Upon His Prophet, the
Sehaba, and all pious people of all spiritual chains, and on all the Ummah of
the Prophet(Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam)
May Allah accept our
humble efforts to spread this benevolent light of our religion Islam, and
forgive our sins and follies by His ever lasting beneficence. AMEEN
Immense blessings be upon
His Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi Wa Sallam), His companions, his friends, his
family and his Ummah.
P.S. I have tried to be as
brief as possible, there are books in abundance written by scholars of higher
educational and spiritual levels than this humble soul, one could benefit from
them if need be.
(Any indistinctness or
clarification thus needed is most welcome.)
